Achieving gender equality is about fundamental human rights.

We live in an unjust world where gender inequality remains pervasive and human rights, especially women’s human rights, are violated with impunity. Despite making up half of the world’s population, stark gender disparities remain including unequal access to land, resources, opportunities and decision-making. In a world ravaged by countless intersecting crises, injustices, and inequalities, we need champions of women’s human rights and all human rights.

Climate change is the crisis of our times.

As the global community pushes past planetary boundaries, potentially exceeding average temperatures by at least 8 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, the impacts of climate change are here and now. From island nations disappearing before our eyes, to deadly heat waves destroying livelihoods – climate change is a matter of survival for populations most at risk, including women and girls.  Those least responsible for climate change are bearing the brunt of its impacts. Their voices must be heard in the struggle for climate justice.

Our challenge is to create a world where human rights and environmental integrity prosper.

The world’s population is projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, with the highest concentration in the poorest countries, presenting a set of challenges. How do we meet the development needs of the present, without compromising the needs of the future? To achieve sustainable development, we need action on three fronts: social, economic and environmental. Women are central to progress in each area.

Advancing women’s human rights, supporting women’s leadership and investing in capacity building are key levers of change.

One thing remains certain: women’s organizing is key. Women’s capacity to speak, innovate, and lead is a driver for sustainable change, and WEDO acts as bridge builder. Through advocacy and action, we connect and facilitate spaces for women’s organizations; governments; and intergovernmental organizations, including the United Nations to ensure that women’s rights are at the heart of global and national policies.  As trainers and movement builders, we deliver leadership development and advocacy skills training to hundreds of women each year ensuring women are empowered as decision-makers.
