NEW YORK (May 19, 2013)— Today, Monday, May 19, 2014, WEDO is honored to co-host a celebration and tribute honoring the life and legacy of our great friend, visionary, sister and ally, Professor Wangari Muta Maathai.

Through the unveiling of a plaque to mark a tree planted by Wangari Maathai on May 17, 2005, as well as the planting of a new Dogwood tree gifted by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Prof. Maathai’s legacy will take root and nourish the foundation of the Headquarters of the United Nations, and all who work to create a peaceful and sustainable world.

The event is co-organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations in collaboration with the Green Belt Movement International (GBMI), the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), and the International Council of Women (ICW).

For those who cannot join us in New York for this event, the celebration will be webcast on UN TV, http://webtv.un.org/, and the organizers invite all to share photos, stories, quotes and memories of Wangari throughout the day using the hashtag #WangariMaathai.
