Key Issues, Government Commitments And Actions for Sustainable Development

Government commitments of the past decade provide a foundation for the eradication of poverty, water-borne diseases and gender inequities. However, successful implementation relies on a better understanding of the different roles and responsibilities women and men have in water access and use; health, sanitation and hygiene; environmental health and ecosystem stability; and public versus private services.

In most cultures, women and men have different roles and responsibilities in the use and management of water. Women and girls are responsible for collecting water for cooking, cleaning, health and hygiene, and if they have access to land, growing food.
