WEDO’s Eleanor Blomstrom, collaborated with The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) to write Access and Gender, the first paper in the ACCESS FOR ALL SERIES: Policies for Inclusive Transit-Oriented Development.

The paper explores how transportation systems have failed to account for diverse mobility patterns and needs among genders. It provides an overview of the gender aspects of sustainability mobility for civil society, government officials, foundations, and transport experts, and it offers a set of recommendations to improve access for women. The paper further discusses how transport systems historically have not taken into consideration the different mobility patterns and needs between genders and how this creates a dynamic that perpetuates gender gaps in society, in both developed and developing world cities.
