The GGCA is a unique network of non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations and UN agencies, whose goal is to ensure that all climate change decision-making, policies and initiatives, at all levels, are gender responsive.
As a founding member – together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), – of the GGCA, WEDO contributes to global and national policy advocacy, capacity building and knowledge generation, and will focus on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process throughout 2009.
At the UNFCCC conference (COP-14) in Poznan, Poland, last December, WEDO on behalf of the GGCA was successful in submitting several suggestions for gender text, which will be taken into consideration this year, as Parties work toward the crucial decisions of COP-15 in Copenhagen.
Also in Poznan, the GGCA launched a Gender and Climate Change Training Manual and held an orientation for Party delegations. These orientations on the gender dimensions of climate change will be repeated throughout the year, and in preparation for each major UNFCCC meeting. The manual will be available soon on our website.
WEDO works with all members of the alliance to lobby governments and build the GGCA’s membership of organizations working toward a gender-sensitive international climate change agreement.
