NEW YORK (August 28, 2013) – Today, the new Head of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka- in just her second week in office- held the “first of many” informal briefings with some members of civil society at UN Headquarters in NY. Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka, who started out as a youth leader in civil society, spoke of her task of remaining an activist inside a bureaucracy, of working with and taking the lead from civil society, and ensuring UN Women’s work amplifies and strengthens the great work being done by so many on the ground. She emphasized the need for leadership which will not “sit on the fence” is not afraid to speak unpopular truths and fights against any and all violations of human rights.
