Greetings Climate Change Advocates!

Gender CC is a network of advocates involved in the climate change negotiations in the lead up to this year’s major International Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen in December. We recently submitted an application to form a gender/women’s constituency under the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—the overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.

During the climate change negotiations in Bonn last July, the women’s caucus participants agreed to form a working group to put forward recommendations on the goals, principles and criteria for participation within this constituency.
Representatives from five active women’s organizations, Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF), Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy (ENERGIA), Women for Climate Justice (Gender CC), LIFE and Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) have been in consultation regarding major questions concerning the working group’s constituency and representation. As part of the process, the working group has agreed to produce two separate, though, interlinked, documents: the Charter and the Operational Guidelines of the Constituency.

The UNFCCC Secretariat has confirmed that Gender CC has been granted the provisional status of Constituency, which will begin in November 1st 2009–just in time for the Barcelona negotiation round! Ms. Gotelind Alber from Gender CC will function as the Focal Point for the Constituency during this time.
The working group aims to finalize both guiding documents for the Constituency by the first week of November 2009, during the upcoming Barcelona negotiations. For those interested in contributing to the draft Charter for the Constituency, click the following link

We kindly request you to submit comments to one of the following email addresses by October 23rd, 2009. This document will be soon followed by the draft Operational Guidelines.

Additionally, if your organization would like to be involved in and/or has a potential interest in becoming a member of the constituency, please send a letter of interest to the above emails and copy Ms. Gotelind Alber (g.alber@gendercc.net). This will help us to secure a timely approval of the application for full constituency status.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation, and we look forward to receiving your comments and inputs to the Constituency Charter.

With warm regards,
