WHAT: COMPETITIVE AWARDS TO GRASSROOTS WOMEN SELECTED IN FIVE CATEGORIES Of LOCAL PROJECTS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

  1. Food Sovereignty
  2. Climate Adaptation
  3. Decent Jobs and Health
  4. Water and Sanitation
  5. Sustainable Energy

WHY:    At their February 2012 annual meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, the Network of Women Ministers agreed to acknowledge exemplary work of grassroots at the local level. The opportunity of Rio+20 presented an ideal time to launch this awards program for the first time. WECF is a supporting member of the network and was asked to take the lead in soliciting  applications – 150 applications were received– and all were excellent.  On June  21st in Rio, 6 first place and 5 each second and third place (16 total)  award winners will be announced with a majority of the winners present at the ceremony.
