New York– The Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) in partnership with Earth Day Network is proud to announce our participation in the 2011 Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference, which will take place February 8-10 in Washington, D.C. Our workshop, “Women’s Leadership in the Green Economy” will discuss the importance of women’s leadership, mentorship, and training in advancing the green economy; examine gender-responsive financing; and share examples of successful initiatives from around the world.
Overview
Women are positioned to play a powerful role in achieving the goals of an economic model that is rights-based and serves people and the planet. From international business leaders directing their companies to develop green jobs and embrace a green economy, to micro-level low carbon initiatives in rural areas around the world, women are transforming the local and global economy. This panel will share examples of successful grassroots initiatives from around the world; examine gender-responsive financing; and discuss the importance of women’s leadership, mentorship, and training, through specific initiatives such as Earth Day Network’s Women and the Green Economy (WAGE™) Campaign. Workshop participants will share their ideas and experiences and help draft recommendations for continued work to build alliances between women around the world; foster networking across all sectors; and create a transformative movement of women leaders working together to shape the green economy and the future of our planet.

About the Conference
The 2011 Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference will bring together key labor, environmental, business and community stakeholders for the leading forum for sharing ideas and strategies on how to build a green economy that creates good jobs, reduces global warming and addresses other environmental problems, and secures an economic and environmental future. This year’s Conference includes sessions with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling, Vice President Biden’s Chief Economist Jared Bernstein, White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley, Congressman Keith Ellison, as well as labor and environmental leaders. The Conference will feature two days of plenaries and more than 100 informative workshops on topics ranging from clean energy manufacturing to state and local initiatives to green infrastructure and transportation.
