New York, April 1—With visible progress on many fronts, the Gender Equality Architecture Reform Campaign (GEAR) that seeks to create a new women’s entity at the UN was the focus of an article by the Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency this week.

The GEAR Campaign, which is comprised of a coalition of over 300 women’s organizations and human rights groups, including WEDO, has lobbied hard for the creation of an entity that would better deliver for women on the ground.

So far, the campaign has garnered significant support by member states who are currently reviewing the different options as outlined by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for strengthening the UN’s gender architecture.

“It is evident that the current U.N. gender equality architecture is fragmented, under-resourced and lacks a clear driver,” said Colette Tamko, WEDO Gender and Governance Program Coordinator. “This is the very reason behind the reform process and the GEAR Campaign.”
