Women and girls around the world are demanding and creating systemic change and a sustainable future for all. We need collective power to attain a just future – we need you.
In an effort to accelerate climate action amongst all stakeholders and sectors, the United Nations is hosting a Climate Ambition Summit on September 20 in New York. At the same time, climate weeks will be hosted across regions over the next few months to demand urgent action. At these events, world leaders—who are being called on to commit to climate action—will convene to identify the best paths toward supporting communities most impacted by climate change, ending the era of fossil fuels, and accelerating a just energy transition.
WEDO is preparing to tap into this momentum this month to ensure gender justice is central to all discussions, decisions, and planning; to showcase feminist leadership in ending fossil fuels fast, fair and forever; and to uplift and scale feminist visions and solutions for a peaceful and healthy planet.
We hope you will join us! Read more below to learn how you can help advance gender-just climate action—in New York and online.
On September 17, thousands will gather in New York City to demand President Biden take bold action to end fossil fuels for global climate justice. All are invited to join a bloc of feminists and gender justice advocates at the March to End Fossil Fuels to march, sing and raise our voices in community! Information about the route, accessibility, and further resources can be found on the march website.
We’ll convene together at 12pm ET on September 17. Please RSVP to our event page, stay tuned for more details, and reach out to Mara Dolan (mara@wedo.org) for any questions or support needs.
As Africa Climate Week begins next week in Nairobi, WEDO Senior Global Policy Lead Mwanahamisi Singano is supporting the African WGC Caucus in convening a full-day event on African women’s leadership in the context of climate change. Women and gender advocates representing more than 100 organizations from around the continent are gathering to call for greater recognition of women’s leadership in climate mitigation and adaptation, advancement towards a gender-just energy transition in Africa, and resourcing of gender-just climate solutions.
Sessions include information about how loss and damage has impacted African women, economic justice and what’s required for climate finance to reach women and communities, and African women’s climate solutions and leadership in climate change.
As we continue to push for divestment from fossil fuels, we also call for greater investment in proven solutions that protect people and the planet. Feminist solutions to the climate crisis already exist across the world—but are often under-recognized and under-resourced. This September, we are calling for more accessible, flexible, and sustained funding for these solutions—including via the GJCS Scale Fund, one model of small-scale regranting that supports and upscales effective but underfunded solutions.
Help us spread the word about feminist climate solutions by discovering and sharing more about the collection of solutions in the Women & Gender Constituency GJCS Directory.
Robust data that reveals the gendered realities of climate change, disasters and environmental impact is critical for developing inclusive and equitable policies that advance climate justice. To this end, WEDO will share more during Climate Week about two initiatives that aim to contribute to gender-transformative climate and environment action through research and data: The Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA), and the Gender Climate Tracker. At Feminist Funded ’23, WEDO will share more about the gender-environment nexus at a data-focused event hosted by IWDA.
We’ll also be hosting meetings to finalize our first round of membership outreach for membership outreach for GEDA, and start our planning for the gender and environment data conference happening right before COP28.
On September 12—as part of Feminist Funded ’23 in Washington, DC—a one-day Feminist Foreign Policy Convening will provide an opportunity for both US-based and global gender justice allies to connect on policy opportunities across the globe. WEDO Executive Director Bridget Burns will speak at a session to address how principles of Feminist Foreign Policy connect to those underpinning climate justice.
