NEW YORK (February 18, 2014)– This week, from February 19th -21st, the Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) will hold its fifth meeting in Bali, Indonesia. The Board will discuss key issues pertinent for the operationalization of the GCF in addition to exploring options for a Fund-wide gender-sensitive approach.

At COP17 in 2011, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) made history as the first global climate finance mechanism to include gender equality concerns at its inception by including specific commitments on gender in its Governing Instrument, including by mandating the Fund to strive to maximize the impact of its funding for adaptation and mitigation while “taking a gender-sensitive approach” (para.3).

Since then, much effort has been made to articulate and substantiate this gender-sensitive approach, particularly through the advocacy of gender and climate finance experts at the Heinrich Boell Foundation North America and members of the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) Finance Working Group.

In preparation for the upcoming GCF Board Meeting, these experts have released a brief entitled: Achieving a Fund-Wide Gender-Sensitive Approach in the Green Climate Fund: Recommendations for the 6th Meeting of the GCF Board. The brief includes priority actions for the Board to take in Bali so that the GCF can make progress towards operationalizing a gender-sensitive approach.
