Cape Town, South Africa (September 9-11, 2015) – Last week, WEDO’s Bridget Burns joined the 2nd Annual African CSO Meeting, hosted by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Southern Africa focused on re-thinking strategies for African civil society to combat climate change, including reviewing the ‪UNFCCC‬ process for a new global climate agreement, and ensuring a strong and united call for priorities for African CSOs. These included financing for adaptation, mechanisms to hold developed countries accountable to ambitious mitigation commitments, and that all actions in the new agreement are gender-responsive. Bridget presented lessons and strategies for effective advocacy in the climate process and coordination among women’s groups engaged in the UNFCCC, including how to ensure a strong African voice in global advocacy. Partners from the Women’s Environment Programme (Nigeria), Abantu for Development, CARE (relief agency), Support for Women in Agriculture and Environment (SWAGEN), Kenya Climate Justice Women Champions, LDC Watch and Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) were among the many CSOs represented.
