New York– On Monday, November 29th during COP16, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with WEDO, WOCAN, and IUCN will host a side event entitled “The missing link to success: Women in REDD”. This event will examine how having a gender approach and women’s empowerment are essential to a successful implementation of REDD initiatives. Panelists include leaders of Tebtebba, IUCN, CARE, women’s groups managing community forests in Nepal, WOCAN and representatives of the Norwegian and Mexican governments.

The event is scheduled from 13:20—14:40 in Sandia.

This side event is part of a larger initiative between IUCN, WEDO, and WOCAN to:

a. Ensure that global and national REDD+ efforts are gender responsive;
b. Leverage women’s leadership to mitigate the effects of climate change;
c. Align with sustainable development goals; and
d. Alleviate poverty.

On the day of the side event, all participants – women and men – that believe that women can make a difference in REDD initiatives are requested to WEAR RED to show their solidarity.

Throughout the COP16, red fans and postcards, as well as red scarves for women and men will be handed out to participants who want to show their support.
