In 2015, countries will work to develop an international framework for climate action with a new agreement under the UNFCCC expected to be delivered in December at the COP21 in Paris. A just and gender-responsive climate agreement fundamentally will respect and promote human rights and gender equality: require fair, equitable and ambitious mitigation commitments in line with the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities; call for urgent and prioritized adaptation action and resources that respond to the most vulnerable countries, communities and populations; demand a sustainable energy paradigm, prioritizing safe, decentralized renewable energy systems that benefit people and communities; ensure adequate, new, additional and predictable climate finance for developing countries; and additionally provide resources to reconcile loss and damage already incurred from climate inaction.
But is this the climate agreement the world will see in 2015? And if not, how do feminist and women’s human rights advocates ensure climate ‘solutions’ which support rights, enhance resilience and deliver a just transition with decent work for all?
This dialogue will lay out the roadmap to COP20 in Paris, where a new climate agreement is set to be finalized, highlight some of the advocacy asks of women advocates engaged in the UNFCCC climate negotiations, and explore the key opportunities for action and mobilization in 2015 and beyond.
