New York, USA (Dec. 12, 2015) — Women’s rights and feminist organizations are working through networks, across sectors and levels, to implement and monitor the complex 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, said WEDO’s Eleanor Blomstrom at the Multi-stakeholder Forum held by UN Women to discuss “Implementing the 2030 Agenda to Accelerate Realization of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls” as preparation for CSW60. Without active constituencies of rightsholders like the Women’s Major Group in setting the agenda, fewer voices of people living in poverty and the most marginalized would have arrived at and been heard at the UN.

Eleanor also highlighted the importance of governments engaging with and directly funding women’s organizations building on existing knowledge, as well as forging innovating and quality partnerships with them for implementation. These partnerships should be prioritized over public-private partnerships and serve to amplify the on-ground projects and solutions that demonstrate multiple benefits but rarely receive recognition or financing. She stressed that governments, UN and civil society should not pigeon-hole women to Goal 5 because gender is cross-cutting, and a gender lens will support success in all goals.

She closed by saying that ‘solutions for implementation are out there…we need to find them, fund them, implement and amplify them.”
