WARSAW, POLAND (November 18, 2013) – What are the gender gaps in climate change mitigation? This is the question the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) and the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy (ENERGIA) answer in their new publication: Exposing Gender Gaps in Financing Climate Change Mitigation – and Proposing Solutions and in a summary factsheet (available in English, French and Spanish).

This publication, supported by the Climate & Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), presents three case studies and an overview and contributes to the limited pool of research on the linkages between gender equality and mitigation finance. Best practices are highlighted from mitigation projects implemented in Colombia, Mali and Nepal, and recommendations are made for next steps to improve research on the issue and develop gender-sensitive tools geared to climate finance and mitigation experts and practitioners.

This publication comes at an opportune time when the international climate change negotiations are taking unprecedented steps in actions on gender equality issues. For the first time, there was an in-session workshop on gender and climate change at the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 19th Conference of Parties (UNFCCC COP19) in Warsaw, Poland. In addition, the UNFCCC is hosting its 2nd Gender Day on November 19th, during which WEDO, the GGCA and, partner, Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF), will host a fireside chat from 20:15-21:15 to further discuss climate change finance and gender equality in relation to low carbon, sustainable development.

This research only scratches the surface of gender equality and mitigation finance, and it exposes the need for systematic data collection and monitoring and evaluation methods to inform tools and incorporate gender equality in a comprehensive and effective manner.
