The 44th G7 summit is being held from June 8-9, 2018, in Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada. Feminists, gender and women’s rights activists have been mobilizing to present key demands to the G7 countries.

In May 2018, WEDO joined the W7 Feminist Summit in Canada, together with 70 feminists from around the globe, to generate key recommendations for G7 leaders to make choices that improve women’s rights and gender equality not only in their countries, but globally. These #W7Canada recommendations included:

  • Adopt Intersectional feminism
  • Facilitate women’s economic empowerment
  • Build a more peaceful and secure world
  • Work together on climate change
  • Adopt a feminist approach to #SRHR
  • End #VAW
  • Build feminist movements

WEDO in particular worked with allies to ensure that climate and environmental issues were strongly reflected in the outcomes. Including calls to:

  • Strengthen and implement the Paris Agreement commitments to hold global warming to 1.5 degrees and mobilize $100 billion in climate finance by 2020.
  • Transform the global economic system from one focused on growth to one focused on justice, particularly taking into account the gendered and health impacts of climate change.
  • Invest money and capacity in alternative solutions that come from communities, academics, and feminist movements. These solutions will protect forests, fresh water supplies and oceans, and build a more just economy where women, farmers, fisherfolk, Indigenous Peoples will not just survive, but thrive.

Read full report here and watch videos from the Summit below.

In addition to the W7, on June 4, 2018, the Gender Equality Advisory Council for Canada’s G7 Presidency issued a set of recommendations, that can be read here. This also includes key recommendations to ensure:

  • Climate leadership and participation
  • Gender-responsive climate financin
  • Just transition: gender equality in low carbon and climate resilient economies

Help us to share these feminist demands as leaders meet for the #G7!
