Breaking Free from oppression of indigenous people and the exploitation of their lands
Honduras: The continued call for #Justice4Berta is being amplified throughout the world. Rallies have been held in Honduras lead by Berta’s community and organization COPINH and throughout the world, including a recent Mother’s Day rally in NYC led by the Indigenous Environmental Network, and Grassroots Global Justice Alliance who are calling for petition signatures here: https://ggj.ourpowerbase.net/
Peru: Máxima Acuña, is a Peruvian peasant and subsistence farmer who lead an impassioned resistance movement against a copper and U.S. gold mining giant threatening to displace her from her land. Earlier this year she was awarded with the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize but is now back in Peru and facing physical harassment and legal threats for her brave stand. The international women’s rights organization MADRE hosted a delegation of Indigenous women leaders from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and North America to the 15th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII). The delegation supported Indigenous women in their advocacy work at the United Nations, to foster an exchange of knowledge between Indigenous women from different regions around the world. On May 10th, they held a forum inside the UN on “Climate Change & Resource Conflict: Peacebuilding Strategies from Indigenous Women Leader”- to share experiences of conflict and resistance across regions. “Indigenous women are more than victims, they are forging solutions in their local communities”Yifat Susskind, MADRE ED
