Rally for Berta Facebook Post

On March 17, activists and allies will join Berta’s family in demanding justice for her murder, protection and security for her family and COPINH members and the immediate halt to plans for the Agua Zarca Hydroelectric dam in Rio Blanco, Honduras by rallying in front of the Honduran Mission to the UN in New York.

Berta Cáceres, feminist & indigenous woman human rights defender (WHRD) was brutally murdered on March 3, 2016 while sleeping in her home in Intibucá. She co-founded and directed the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH), which was resisting the construction of DESA’s AguaZarca hydroelectric dam.Yesterday, March 15th, Nelson García, another COPINH member, was gunned down in his home in Honduras.

Berta’s death highlights the desperate need to end impunity for threats and attacks against all human rights defenders and enact laws for their protection.

If you are in New York, join the Cáceres family, leaders of the COPINH, the Honduran Women’s Human Rights Defenders Network, women’s human rights and environmental organizations and hundreds of individuals, social justice leaders and activists at tomorrow’s rally at 5:30 PM in front of the Honduran Mission to the UN. Please see the Facebook event for further details.

Everyone can show their solidarity by spreading the word online in the next 24 hours.
