OUR PRIORITIES AT CSW69

The 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 10 to 21, 2025.

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) at the Fourth World Conference on Women. CSW69 will focus on reviewing: the implementation of the Platform for Action; the current challenges that affect its implementation, the achievement of gender equality, and the empowerment of women; and its contribution toward realizing Sustainable Development Goals.

Though adopting the Platform for Action was the most comprehensive commitment to gender equality at the time, many governments have failed to follow through with their commitments to policy reform. Women and girls still face systemic inequality worldwide, especially with the renewed efforts of various governments to reduce rights. Gender-environment data reveals these implementation gaps while providing essential evidence to hold governments accountable for their commitments and advocate for policies that address women’s unique environmental experiences and realities.

WEDO is sending a delegation to CSW69 to convene and connect with our coalition partners and other gender advocates as we collectively work to identify how we will mobilize in this moment, how we will hold the line on progress, and where we have opportunities to learn and grow.

Throughout CSW69, the WEDO team will work closely with other members of the Women and Gender Constituency, Gender + Environment Data Alliance (GEDA), Women’s Major Group (WMG), and SRHR and Climate Justice Coalition, among others, as part of our commitment towards collective advocacy for gender-just policies.

WEDO at CSW69 — Bridget Burns, Executive Director, WEDO: Bridget specializes in policy advocacy, research and movement building at the intersection of gender equality, women’s rights and environment/climate justice. For more than a decade, she has been particularly focused on integrating gender equality into the decisions and outcomes of the UNFCCC. Mwanahamisi (“Mishy”) Singano, Global Policy Director, WEDO: Mwanahamisi is an African feminist passionate about fighting structural and intersecting inequalities. At WEDO, Mwanahamisi serves as Global Policy Director, supports the Gender Just Transition portfolio, and leads WEDO’s engagements in other Rio Conventions (CBD and UNCCD) and UNDRR. She also serves as co-Focal Point of the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC). Katie Tobin, Senior Manager, Programs, WEDO: Kathryn (“Katie”) has worked on sustainable development, gender justice, and human rights since 2011. At WEDO, Katie coordinates the Gender Environment Data Alliance and leads WEDO’s work at the nexus of economic, climate, and gender justice. Claudia Rubio, Program Associate, WEDO: Claudia is a Dominican-Colombian feminist, lawyer, researcher and activist. At WEDO, she supports the collection, analysis, and use of data in the Gender Climate Tracker and contributes to the ongoing development of the Gender and Environment Data Alliance. Mara Dolan, Coordinator, Policy and Programs, WEDO: Mara is a feminist, organizer, student, and writer. At WEDO, she leads the organization’s U.S. advocacy work- including support for the Feminist Green New Deal Coalition, as well as WEDO’s burgeoning work around energy justice, and peace and demilitarization. Alex Gordon, Senior Coordinator, Programs, Policy & Development, WEDO: Alex is a mixed-black, queer human rights advocate currently using their experiences and skills as a program manager working at the intersection of gender equality and climate justice. At WEDO, they manage the Gender Just Climate Solutions Scale Fund, support many collaborations related to grassroots climate solutions, and coordinate with colleagues for the implementation of the Gender Climate Tracker.

Reflecting on 30 years of gender advancement for an inclusive energy future

This session, organized by the Gender and Energy Compact, will call for reflection on the progress made and discuss the gaps that still exist in gender-inclusive energy policies, women’s leadership in energy, the use of sex-disaggregated data for accountability and informed decision-making, and the urgent need to address energy poverty.
