OVERVIEW
As one of the most significant challenges of our time, climate change is responsible for increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, natural resource scarcity, and environmental degradation. Similarly, widespread conflict is causing an increase in the destruction of the environment and livelihoods including mass displacement. Both climate change and conflict exacerbate existing gender inequalities and directly affect the lives of women and girls in profound ways.
This new program stream is focused on advocacy and research in relation to women’s rights, climate change, peace and conflict as well as natural resource management and disasters. It is critical to better understand the interrelationship among these issues especially from a gender equality perspective. We must prioritize and dedicate time and resources to research and program-building on the interlinkages in order to achieve sustainable peace and development.
Vision for Change
WEDO is calling for:
- Establishment of a Gender Working Group on Peace, Security and Natural Resources in the Context of Climate Change
- Increased research on the impacts of climate change and conflict on women and girls
- Development of programs that address the linkages between climate change and conflict from a gender perspective
