Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world

WEDO AT HLPF 2017

The High-Level Political Forum, the U.N.’s key mechanism for tracking progress on the new Sustainable Development Goals, will be held from 10-19 July 2017 in New York. The three-day ministerial meeting of the forum is held from Monday, 17 July, to Wednesday, 19 July 2017.

The theme of HLPF 2017 is “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world”. The Forum, which adopts a Ministerial Declaration, is expected to provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations on the 2030 Agenda’s implementation and follow-up; keep track of progress of the SDGs; spur coherent policies informed by evidence, science and country experiences; as well as address new and emerging issues. The Sustainable Development Goals and their means of implementation to be reviewed this year are:

Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Goal 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

WEDO, as part of the Women’s Major Group(WMG), calls for gender equality, the realization of women’s human rights and the empowerment of women as essential and cross-cutting to the implementation of all the SDGs.

WEDO will be leading and participating in a range of side events, training sessions and actions to ensure that systemic causes of ‘being left behind’ are addressed for real transformational change. Keep up to date on our latest events here and on the Women’s Major Group Facebook page.

Recommendations from WMG on engaging with the VNR Process

Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) are a central part of the work of the HLPF, yet they are only one part of the Forum. Other key elements include roundtables and presentations to assess progress globally, look at interlinkages with other processes, address countries in special situations, dialogue with Major Groups and Other Stakeholders and non-state actors; as well as to provide guidance on implementing the 2030 Agenda.
