Last month, Climate Week 2022—held from September 19 – 25—marked the 14th year of the global climate event. Hosted by the Climate Group in conjunction with the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the City of New York, the week was a moment of convening stakeholders in New York City around various climate-related events, actions and meetings.
To commemorate the week this year, WEDO and its Young Feminist Team organized multiple events to gather with movement partners and advocate for #FeministClimateJustice at #ClimateWeekNYC and beyond.
An evening mixer for young feminists, advocates, and activists working across movements for climate justice, gender justice, economic justice, social justice, and more was organised on Friday, September 23, for those who were in NYC. The event was co-organized by WEDO, WEACT for Environmental Justice, and NY Communities for Change.
There was food, music, a conversation circle, and action & art stations!
Building on the in-person feminist mixer, the WEDO Young Feminist task team and AWID organized the Young Feminist Virtual Meet-Up to connect and share solidarity with young feminists from across the Asia, Pacific, African and LAC regions who might not be able to attend the climate week in person.
Young intersectional feminists are working hard to lead the climate justice movement, and through the virtual event, we wished to highlight the wins and challenges that young feminists have been navigating through in their organizations and movements, and explore what feminist climate justice means to us.

Seven years after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals – almost halfway to the 2030 deadline – the visionary promise of social justice and a rights-based, equitable and ecologically just world for all appears to be a distant dream. 1300 participants from groups who have historically been marginalized and excluded, as well as civil society organisations from over 127 countries, called upon world leaders to take bold and transformative steps to address the current unjust, unequal and extractive system at the three-day Global People’s Assembly (GPA) held from 22-24 September during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, 2022.
A Declaration developed with inputs from over 30 national and regional people’s assemblies, was adopted at the GPA on 22 September. The Women’s Major Group helped convene the GPA and the drafting of the Declaration, and co-organized a webinar with the Feminist Action Nexus members and allies on Corporate Capture vs. Systems Change: Identifying a Feminist Way Forward. Watch the full recording of the webinar below and listen to the testimonies of struggles against corporate capture, and inspiration for a collective transformation towards a gender equal world.
Environmental change has differentiated impacts on different genders, and there is increasing evidence that women and girls disproportionately suffer from climate change and environmental disasters. But a massive shortage of gender-disaggregated data at the gender-environment nexus hinders action and policy to advance both climate action and gender equality. To surface these challenges as well as existing solutions, the newly formed Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA) hosted a high-level launch event to discuss how investment and resourcing of gender and environment data is a crucial contributor to gender-responsive climate policy.

Through our engagement with the US Climate Action Network, the Vision For Equitable Climate Action (VECA) policy document is one of the policy frameworks we uplift in our US program work. Reframing the solutions of the climate crisis from a frontline and environmental justice perspective, the VECA is a living document that provides an uncompromising framework of climate solutions to foster bold climate action in a comprehensive and equitable way, co-created through member consultation.
The USCAN panel discussion aimed at envisioning a shared future, exploring the Vision For Equitable Climate Action framework, and how to use this policy platform within the #UNFCCC.
