Pumla Mncayi of Gender Advocacy Program reported that in March of 2002 South Africa became the 11th country to officially launch the 50/50 Campaign. The political climate in South Africa has taken a turn since 2002 evidenced by the increase in the number of women in the cabinet in the 2004 elections.
The 50/50 campaign aims to concretely address the issue of women’s under-representation in political decision-making and to confront the structural and cultural barriers that impede women’s access to decision-making and leadership positions.
Women’s participation is crucial for a just society. Changes need to be made at how we view women’s participation in society with a look at numbers together with the environment and context.
