Since President Biden began his term in 2021, pressure has been mounting on the U.S. to do its part for global climate justice. This includes calling for the U.S. to recognize the outsized role it has played in causing the global climate crisis and uphold commensurate commitments to global climate finance.
Because the U.S. has driven global capitalism and extraction–root causes of the climate crisis–it is imperative that U.S. actions in regards to climate action and finance are reflective of this reality. The framework of “Fair Shares” provides an approach and methodology to guide this action, in part by breaking down the reality of historical emissions, the scale of mitigation and climate finance needed, and the necessity of the US paying up for the damage it has caused.
Take just six minutes to learn more in this video:
In 2021, WEDO joined allied organizations in releasing the “Fair Shares Nationally Determined Contribution.” The Fair Shares NDC laid out the measures the United States should commit to carrying out to deliver its “fair share” of the global effort to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C, based on its status as the world’s wealthiest country and largest historical carbon polluter.
These efforts to advocate around the U.S. Fair Shares framework developed into the U.S. Climate Fair Shares Collaborative. WEDO engages with this collaborative to increase the understanding of the “Fair Shares” approach, including the video above.
Fundamental to the U.S. achieving its fair share is implementing urgent and robust mitigation efforts, starting with ending all support for fossil fuel extraction. This vital first step toward the 195% reduction in emissions posited as the U.S.’s mitigation fair share–to be accomplished via domestic emissions reductions and international climate finance–will be the focus of the March to End Fossil Fuels this September in New York City. Stay tuned for more information, and join WEDO at the Feminist Climate Justice bloc.
