This Women's History Month, we're shining a light on the extraordinary founders who not only shaped our organization but also helped steer the course of global feminist and environmental movements. Their vision and passion continue to inspire WEDO's work today.

Thirty years ago, WEDO was born from a bold belief: that women's leadership is essential to solving the world's greatest challenges. Its co-founders pushed for gender equity to be placed at the heart of global environmental and sustainable development policy — a vision that was transformative then, and remains urgent now.

A Conversation Across Generations

Executive Director Bridget Burns sat down with Thais Corral, one of WEDO's co-founders, for a heartfelt conversation about where WEDO started and where it's going. Thais's vision of feminism is rooted in community, ecology, and the global South, and her reflections offer a rare window into the founding spirit that still animates everything we do.

Together, Bridget and Thais explore the stories behind WEDO's beginnings, the organization's distinctive culture of collaboration and friendship, and their shared hopes for the future leaders of the feminist climate justice movement.

Bella on Screen

That founding spirit is also being celebrated on screens across the United States. The new PBS documentary American Masters — Bella! This Woman's Place Is in the House tells the story of Bella Abzug, one of WEDO's groundbreaking co-founders.

Bella championed women's, human, and environmental rights and worked tirelessly to ensure women's voices were heard at the United Nations and in global policy spaces. The film features archival footage, home videos, and interviews with Gloria Steinem, Shirley MacLaine, Barbra Streisand, and others who credit Bella with shaping their own courage and conviction.

Together, these stories — Thais and Bridget in conversation, and Bella's life on screen — remind us of the living legacy we carry forward, and the trailblazers we honor as we continue this work.
